Pastoral Care

Our commitment to pastoral care is fundamental to our educational philosophy. We truly believe that ‘happy children learn’ and understand that for children to excel academically, they also need to feel supported emotionally and socially. Our comprehensive pastoral care system ensures that every child receives the personal attention they need to thrive.

Our pastoral framework is built around our ASPIRE values – Achieve, Strive, Participate, Investigate, Respect and Enjoy. These values are not only integral to our school ethos, but also actively promoted through our established rewards system. This system celebrates successes, both big and small and encourages a positive school culture where all our children feel valued.

Individual Attention and Support

Our approach to pastoral care centres on understanding and nurturing each child’s unique qualities. Teachers and staff at Gateway School develop ongoing, meaningful relationships with the children, ensuring that we are well-acquainted with each child’s abilities, challenges and potential. This deep understanding enables us to provide tailored support that meets the individual needs of each child.

School Nurse

We prioritise the health and well-being of every child.  Our School Nurse’s office is staffed by a qualified, in-house nurse available daily from 08:00 to 16:00. Our nurse is dedicated to ensuring that the children receive the best care possible during school hours. Our nurse also plays a vital role in educating the children and school community on health-related topics, contributing to a healthier school environment.

Learning for Life Curriculum

Our Learning for Life Curriculum is designed to support children in developing essential life skills. This curriculum includes a responsibilities program, mentoring systems and a series of Mindfulness courses tailored for our senior pupils. These programs help the children manage both school-related challenges and broader personal development.

Support Services

Recognising that some children may need additional support, we provide access to a range of specialised services. This includes school counsellors, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, as well as dyslexia and SEND specialists. These professionals work collaboratively to ensure that all our children have the support they need to succeed.

Wellbeing Hub

We recognise the importance of mental and emotional health in developing a productive and happy learning environment. To support the wellbeing of our pupils, we are proud to offer an on site Wellbeing Hub. This facility is central to our pastoral care strategy, providing a dedicated space where children can focus on their mental and emotional health.

Open Communication with Parents

We maintain an ‘open door’ policy, creating strong, transparent lines of communication with parents. This policy promotes a partnership that is essential for effectively supporting each child’s educational journey. Regular updates and open dialogue ensure that parents are well-informed and actively involved in their child’s school experiences.

We take immense pride in our pastoral care system. It is designed to ensure that every child not only achieves academic success, but also grows into a confident, resilient and caring individual. Our environment is one where every child is known, valued, and supported to achieve their fullest potential.

Gateway is such a supportive and caring learning environment which allows the children's confidence to grow. The children are treated as individuals Parent Survey, April 2024.
We couldn't have been happier with Gateway School. The broad and engaging curriculum, the specialist teaching, small class sizes and emphasis on building confidence and independence has been excellent. In Upper Prep, the support for 11+ grammar and independent school applications has surpassed our expectations and the children are well prepared for the secondary school of their choice.
