Welcome to Lower Prep

Lower Prep encompasses Years 1, 2, and 3 and provides a structured yet dynamic learning environment. Each year builds upon the last, expanding skills and promoting independence. The children form a strong, positive relationship with their Class Teacher who looks out for their wellbeing, but who also teaches the core and humanities subjects. Throughout Lower Prep the children continue to benefit from specialist teaching for art, music, Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) and sport.

Year 1

Year 1 introduces a more structured curriculum than the Early Years experiences and is the beginning of Key Stage 1. Emphasis is placed on independent work, taking responsibility for personal belongings and organising time efficiently. The curriculum is varied and includes a strong focus on English and mathematics, with children engaging in daily reading and writing activities, phonics programs and an engaging robust maths curriculum.

Year 2

Year 2 continues to develop these skills, with children taking greater responsibility for their learning, setting targets and extending their abilities in preparation for Key Stage 2. The curriculum is designed to reinforce core skills while integrating them into broader learning contexts, including cross-curricular links to history, geography, and science. The curriculum continues to reinforce and expand upon core academic skills whilst enjoying growth within humanities, the creative arts, technology and sport.

Year 3

Year 3 is about cementing independence and resilience in learning. Children engage in deeper exploration of subjects, with increased opportunities for reasoning, speaking and listening in English, more complex problem-solving in mathematics, and broader scientific inquiries. A greater link is made between learning and real life and a cross-curricular themed approach is employed for greater engagement and memorable learning experiences.

Learning Beyond the Classroom:

Learning Beyond the Classroom: Educational trips are a core part of the curriculum, designed to enrich the children’s understanding of the topics studied and stimulate curiosity.  During their time in Lower Prep, children experience a range of visitors to the school and excursions further afield that enhance their learning and development. In addition, the children continue to benefit from our Farm School curriculum and outdoor learning programme. Our programme of sports fixtures begins in Year 3 where all children have the opportunity to apply their skills in matches with other schools.

Through a blend of academics, specialist teaching and experiential learning, our Lower Prep children are well-prepared for the academic challenges and opportunities that Upper Prep will bring.
