Before I worked in a school, I used to ask my children this question daily. The response was always the same:
“I can’t remember.”
It baffled me. How could they not remember?
Fast forward to now—working in a school—and my husband asks me, “How was your day? What did you get up to?” And guess what my answer often is?
“I can’t remember.”
It’s not that nothing happened. It’s that so much happened. Schools are extraordinary places. They’re bursting with activity, energy, and purpose. From carefully planned timetables to inspiring lessons, from PE sessions to outdoor learning adventures, from impromptu problem-solving to structured opportunities for growth—the sheer variety in a single school day is mind-blowing.
And that’s when I realised: when children say they can’t remember, it’s not because their day wasn’t amazing. It’s because it was too full of amazing to put into words.
At Gateway, I see this every day. Passionate teachers delivering lessons that spark curiosity, holistic experiences that help children discover their potential, and learning opportunities that shape their view of the world.
It makes me think how lucky children today are to have schools like this. And how lucky we, as educators and parents, are to be part of their journey.
So next time a child says, “I can’t remember,” take it as a sign that their day was simply unforgettable.
This made us realise how important it is to shine a light on all the incredible things happening every day at Gateway, so parents can get a better insight into their children’s busy, vibrant school lives.
This term, we’re launching a Subject Spotlight Blog series to take you behind the scenes of what goes into planning, teaching, and delivering different areas of the curriculum.
If there’s a particular subject or activity you’d love to hear more about as parents, let us know—we’d love your input!
