At Gateway Preschool, we know that play is so much more than just fun—it’s the foundation of learning. From the moment children join us at age 2, they are immersed in a nurturing environment where they can explore, create, and develop essential early skills at their own pace. Through play, they build creativity, problem-solving abilities, and strong foundations in early literacy and numeracy, all while developing confidence and independence.
A Warm and Nurturing Start from Age 2
Our Preschool welcomes children from 2 years old, providing a gentle and supportive introduction to Early Education. We create a calm, homely environment where our youngest learners feel safe and happy as they take their first steps into structured learning. With caring staff and tailored activities, we focus on developing social skills, language, and confidence, ensuring that every child flourishes. Encouraging play in Early Years Education not only makes learning enjoyable but also lays the foundation for lifelong learning!
As they grow, our curriculum evolves with them, seamlessly transitioning from exploratory toddler play to more structured learning experiences, preparing them for their journey into Reception. Through our Ownership of Learning programme, we give all children a chance to guide their own curiosity around our curriculum and have a say in what they would like to know or learn about. Our dedicated teachers and practitioners listen attentively to each child and create wonderful, immersive experiences through play to engage and foster their learning and give them the opportunity to take risks, ask the ‘what if’ questions and take on additional challenges.
How Play Enhances Learning
- Creativity & Imagination
Play unlocks a child’s creativity. Whether they’re painting, role-playing in our home corner, or building with blocks, they’re developing the ability to think critically and express themselves. Our Preschool is full of opportunities for open-ended play, encouraging children to explore their ideas freely. - Problem-Solving & Independence
From working out how to build a stable tower to negotiating turn-taking with friends, play naturally fosters problem-solving skills. Our teachers guide children to think independently, ask questions, and experiment, helping them build confidence in their own abilities. - Early Literacy & Numeracy Through Play
Learning happens naturally when children are immersed in play. We integrate early reading, writing, and maths into fun activities—whether it’s singing rhymes to hear different sounds, counting steps while playing hopscotch, or matching shapes and colours in puzzles. These foundational skills ensure children are ready for their next step into Reception.
Specialist Teaching at Gateway Preschool
At Gateway, we enrich our play-based curriculum with specialist teaching that broadens children’s experiences and enhances their learning.
- French Through Music – Our preschoolers enjoy French lessons delivered through music and movement, helping them absorb new vocabulary in a fun and engaging way. Early exposure to languages builds confidence and sets a strong foundation for future learning.
- Physical Education (PE) – Children develop coordination, balance, and teamwork through structured PE sessions with specialist teachers. These sessions help to instill a love of movement and an understanding of healthy living.
- Outdoor Learning & Forest School – Our outdoor space is a true extension of the classroom. Whether it’s exploring nature, building dens, or storytelling under the trees, outdoor learning helps children connect with the world around them, fostering curiosity and resilience.
Supporting the Transition to Reception
Moving from Preschool to Reception is an exciting milestone, and we ensure that every child feels confident and ready for the change.
- Familiar Faces & Spaces – Our Preschool is closely connected to the main school, meaning children are already familiar with the Reception classrooms, teachers, and routines. This familiarity eases the transition and builds confidence.
- Gradual Introduction to Reception Routines – We introduce aspects of Reception learning, such as phonics and structured group time, in a gentle and playful way so children feel prepared without pressure.
- Emotional & Social Readiness – Beyond academics, we focus on developing independence, resilience, and friendships, ensuring children have the social and emotional skills they need to thrive.
